The University of Texas Pan American, also referred to as UT–Pan Am or UTPA, is a public state university in Edinburg, which is the county seat of Hidalgo County, in the US state of Texas, with a population estimated at a number of more than 48 000 inhabitants, during the 200 census. It is one of the principal cities of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area, which contains all of Hidalgo County.
UTPA was founded in 1927, as a two-year junior college, first starting with an enrollment of only 200 students, today, having more than 17 000 students attending classes, fact which makes it the 10th largest university in the state, offering a wide variety of degrees, through 6 colleges, in total, the university offering its students 56 bachelor's degrees, 45 master's degrees, 2 doctoral degrees, and one cooperative doctoral pharmacy program with The University of Texas at Austin.
Athletics
UT-Pan Am's athletic teams are known as the Broncs, who compete in NCAA Division, in various sports, including in men's basketball, in which they won the 1963 NAIA national men's basketball championship, under Coach Sam Williams, and tennis, in which they won several doubles NAIA championships from 1959 through 1962, under Coach Don Russell.
